Sculptra: What You Need to Know

Sculptra: What You Need to Know

There are many injectables/dermal fillers developed over the last decade and it can be difficult to decide between them. Today we wanted to discuss and share about Sculptra.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved facial injectable that corrects signs of aging by restoring volume to areas of fat loss or sagging skin. As with other fillers, they are your “liquid” facelift.

It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production and can be used to treat deep lines, creases, and folds to give a more youthful

Where is it Injected?

Sculptra is similar to other dermal injectables. As a minimally-invasive procedure, Sculptra is injected beneath the skin usually in the face, where it stimulates new collagen production. Collagen, to review, is responsible for the elastic appearance of your skin.

How long does it last?

Sculptra can last up to two years but requires 3-5 treatments each 4-6 weeks apart.

Since Sculptra is not necessarily a dermal “filler” and actually stimulates collagen production, the results can take some time, which can be several weeks or even months.

Once injected, Sculptra materials triggers a natural reaction in the body to restore collagen and volume where injected. The Sculptra itself gets absorbed and disappears.

What’s the advantage compared to dermal fillers?

As opposed to other dermal fillers which fill in face volume, smooth wrinkles/saggy skin in a certain location, Sculptra offers three-dimensional filling and re-shaping.

Does it work?

Although Sculptra is a relatively new procedure in the US, it has been used in Europe for some time. In fact, over 150,000 patients have been treated with Sculptra.

As always, take a look at some before-and-afters and decide for yourself.

What are the down-sides/side effects to know about?

Firstly, if your skin is very sensitive or you are allergy-prone, many providers recommend using fat transfer.

Secondly, has a tendency to form small bumps under the skin post-treatment. The best way to avoid visible bumps is to not have Sculptra injected into areas with thinner skin. In addition, your provider may use a more diluted injectate to prevent visible bumps.

Lastly, Sculptra should be avoided in areas around the eyes.

In general, it is always wise to do a lot of research on the procedure, the injector’s experience, and track record, including before and after shots to determine if you are comfortable with the results.
